Google stops invitations to new social network Google+

Google Inc stopped inviting users to join its new social network less than 48 hours after beginning a limited rollout of the service.

Google Senior Vice President of Engineering Vic Gundotra said the company had "shut down invite mechanism" for the Google+ service for the night, in a note he posted on Google+ on Wednesday evening.

"Insane demand. We need to do this carefully, and in a controlled way," Gundotra wrote.

Google unveiled Google+ on Tuesday, marking the company's boldest move to take on Facebook , the world's No.1 social networking company. The new Google+ service follows a string of failed attempts by Google to crack the social networking market with products such as Google Buzz and Wave.

A Google spokeswoman declined to say whether Google had resumed inviting people to join Google+ on Thursday or to specify what caused the suspension of invitations.

"We launched Google+ in a Field Trial in order to test the product out and gather more feedback," Google said in an emailed statement.

"As part of the Field Trial, we may open and close Google+ to new users at any time. We're thrilled so many people are interested in trying out a new approach to online sharing."

Nokia to shift 800 staff to Accenture

Nokia India is about to shift 800 employees working on the Symbian platform at its R&D unit in Bangalore to management-consulting firm Accenture, a senior executive said.

Last week, the Finnish handset maker inked an outsourcing deal with Accenture wherein the world's largest IT consulting firm will provide software development and support for Symbian till 2016. Discussions with the employees will begin next week and carry on till Octoberend. Majority of the employees are expected to shift to Accenture; the process will be completed by the year-end. Some of them are working on Nokia projects, they will finish them and move to Accenture," a company spokesperson told ET.

Symbian is Nokia's legacy software and one of the most widely used mobile phone operating systems, with an installed base of over 225 million phones. Earlier this year, Nokia said it would switch to Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 software from Symbian, which will be phased out in about two years.

At the same time, Nokia will continue to invest in Symbian by bringing software upgrades and launching more smartphones on the platform, said Nokia India marketing director Viral Oza. On Wednesday, the market leader launched Symbian Anna, the upgraded version of Symbian, and two smartphones based on the new platform. Over the next 12 months, the company will introduce 10 new smartphones on the Symbian platform.

By August the company will ensure all existing Nokia smartphones users can download Symbian Anna for free and in July, the company will begin to ship the N8, E7, C7 and C6-01 phones embedded with the new software to India.

"We're not going to stop support to Symbian overnight because the ambition is not just to cater to existing users but also selling 150 million more Symbian devices globally. We will continue to invest in Symbian till 2016, improve the S 40 series and in parallel introduce the Windows Phone," Oza said.

The company's strategy has some criticism from analysts but Gartner's principal research analyst Anshul Gupta said it may be a perfect fit for India and China, its key growth markets.

"Nokia is significantly losing market-share globally and in India but Symbian is still in great demand in India. Nokia has around 40% market share in smartphones segment in the country. It plans to sell 150 million handsets on Symbian globally, a large part of that can come from India and China because of its brand recall and prices at which it retails in these markets," Gupta said. Nokia faces tough competition from Samsung, Apple and Blackberrymaker Research in Motion (RIM) across the world while domestic and Chinese handset makers are eating up market share in India. The world's largest phone maker by volume in April overhauled its phone business, announced to reduce its global workforce by 7,000 apart from outsourcing Symbian software to Accenture. Nokia will launch the Windows Phone by the end of the year but the India launch has not been finalised.

Interesting Facts About Nokia

Nokia is currently the world’s largest digital camera manufacturer, as the sales of its camera-equipped mobile phones have exceeded those of any conventional camera manufacturer

Nokia was listed as the 20th most admirable company worldwide in Fortune’s list of 2006 (1st in network communications, 4th non-US company).

The world’s first commercial GSM call was made in 1991 in Helsinki over a Nokia-supplied network, by Prime Minister of Finland Harri Holkeri, using a Nokia phone.

The “Special” tone available to users of Nokia phones when receiving SMS (text messages) is actually Morse code for “SMS”. Similarly, the “Ascending” SMS tone is Morse code for “Connecting People,” Nokia’s slogan. The “Standard” SMS tone is Morse code for “M” (Message).

Nokia is sometimes called aikon (Nokia backwards) by non-Nokia mobile phone users and by mobile software developers, because “aikon” is used in various SDK software packages, including Nokia’s own Symbian S60 SDK.

The Nokia corporate font (typeface) is the AgfaMonotype Nokia Sans font, originally designed by Eric Spiekermann. Its mobile phone User’s Guides Nokia mostly used the Agfa Rotis Sans font.

In Asia, the digit 4 never appears in any Nokia handset model number, because 4 is considered unlucky in many parts of Southeast/East Asia.

The ringtone “Nokia tune” is actually based on a 19th century guitar work named “Gran Vals” by Spanish musician Francisco Tárrega. The Nokia Tune was originally named “Grande Valse” on Nokia phones but was changed to “Nokia Tune” around 1998 when it became so well known that people referred to it as the “Nokia Tune.”

Unlike other modern day handsets, Nokia phones do not automatically start the call timer when the call is connected, but start it when the call is initiated. (Except for Series 60 based handsets like the Nokia 6600)

The name of the town of Nokia originated from the river which flowed through the town. The river itself, Nokianvirta, was named after the old Finnish word originally meaning sable, later pine marten.

Facebook to launch Facebook Credits for Indian users from July 1

Social networking site Facebook will next month introduce a payment system 'Facebook Credits' for Indian users who could spend the virtual currency across various games or applications they use on the popular website.

A virtual currency, Facebook Credits is already popular among gaming enthusiasts in many other countries, including the US.

"Facebook will introduce a new payment system Facebook Credits in India from July 1," a company spokesperson told PTI.

Facebook Credits enables fast and easy transactions across games on the social networking site and would benefit about 2.5 crore Facebook subscribers in the country.

The users would be able to enter their payment information once and can buy, earn and spend safely across various games or applications they use on Facebook.

"Starting July 1, we will require all social game developers on the Facebook canvas platform to process payments through Facebook Credits," Facebook Platform Marketing Manager Deb Liu wrote on the company's official blog in January.

This will also help various brands, which use the medium of Facebook to retail them goods through their social pages.

"Facebook Credits is currently used in more than 350 applications from 150 developers, representing more than 70 per cent of virtual goods transactions volume on Facebook," Liu had said.

Facebook Credits would also offer incentives such as early access to product features, premium promotion on Facebook, premium targeting for ads, and access to new co-promotion opportunities.

Many developers such as Zynga, Playfish, CrowdStar , Digital Chocolate, PopCap and Arkadium have already adopted Facebook Credits for in-game virtual goods.

Wipro plans to increase outsourcing spend by BP & GE to catch up with TCS & Infosys

BANGALORE: Wipro plans to increase its share of outsourcing spend by top customers BP plc and GE, as India's third biggest software exporter seeks to catch up with bigger rivals TCS and Infosys who have more clients contributing over $100 million in annual revenues.

With only three customers contributing $100 million or more, Wipro needs to gain a larger share of spend from top customers. Infosys has 11 customers contributing $100 million or above in yearly revenues, while TCS has eight such lar GE clients. Wipro gets 20% of its revenues from the top ten customers, lower than TCS' 30% and Infosys' 25%.

On its part, Wipro has already started tapping into outsourcing spend by customers such as BP, especially after it acquired SAIC's IT arm.

Wipro's efforts in setting this metric right have started showing. In the January-March 2011 period, the company increased its $100 million clients to three from just one. The company also derived annualised revenue in excess of $50 million from 22 customers in FY11 compared to 16 such customers in FY10.

General Electric, which outsources IT services worth almost $1 billion, is another large client from which Wipro has been increasing revenues. The company got empanelled with GE in 2009 to start bidding for the company's projects again and has grown this to an over $25 million account since then with plans to increase this to well over $50 million.

With the acquisition of SAIC's IT business, Wipro has also been making inroads in BP. Not only has the company acquired SAIC's revenue from BP, it will also be able to sell a greater range of services to the oil major in its upstream business.

"We will also be getting a share of their spends in areas like exploration etc," Anand Padmanabhan, Senior Vice-President, Energy, Natural Resources and Utilities SBU, Wipro Technologies told ET in an interview.

Google targets Facebook with new social networks called Google plus -- Have a first look at Google plus social network

First Look at the Google Plus social network: The Top Secret Demo

One thing that’s clear about Google is that they’ve mastered the art of subterfuge.

At a time when leaks about product launches, acquisitions and potential hires are rife, Google resorted to extraordinary measures to ensure that word of its new social network, Google Plus, did not slip out ahead of Tuesday’s official announcement.

The company reached out to Reuters late on Friday about a special briefing related to some undisclosed YouTube news, even tasking a YouTube PR-man with a curious sartorial style to coordinate the meeting, to complete the red-herring.

So it was surprising to discover a grinning Vic Gundotra, Google’s head of social, and VP of Product Management Bradley Horowitz, in the meeting room at Google’s headquarters.Clearly we weren’t here to talk about a new YouTube media partnership.

The pair quickly revealed what they had up their sleeve and proceeded to give a tour of a new social networking service that’s been one year in the making.

So what is Google Plus like? And why would you want to invest the time and effort to create another social network if you’re already using Facebook and Twitter?
Google is betting that its approach to privacy and extensive controls over who you share information with on the network will set Google Plus apart.

The service revolves around a concept of “circles,” (presumably not the same circles that Dante visited). You can create as many circles as you like, for whatever categories you want: for example family, co-workers or biking friends. Above the circles are a slew of thumbnail images of friends and contacts which Google suggests you might want in your social network. To add a person to one of your groups, drag the name into a circle.

If you decide to remove someone from a circle, you simply drag their image out of the circle, at which point the image will explode into a cloud of smoke – one of several whimsical touches in Google Plus.
To use Google Plus you need to create a Google profile. At the very minimum, Google requires that you use your real name and include a photo. Beyond that, you can furnish the profile with as much, or as little, detail about yourself as you want.

You can control how much of your profile is visible to other folks on the network: your name and occupation for some folks; relationship status for others.  Type a person’s name into a box, and you can see what your profile looks like through their eyes.

In a sense, Google Plus combines the Facebook and Twitter models of social networking: You can have friends in your social network with whom you share information, and you can also simply follow certain people, say a movie critic who you don’ t know personally, a la Twitter.

Nearly all Google websites, such as its flagship Google.com search engine and the Google maps site, will have a special toolbar running across the top of the page.  The toolbar has an icon of your face alongside your name in the top left, to remind you that you are currently logged on to the Google Plus network. Click on your name and you can quickly log off the network, or switch to incognito mode.
Google is also weaving video conferencing into social networking with Google Plus. You can let people in specific circles know that you’re available for a video conference (that you’re available to “hang out” in Google Plus parlance) by clicking on a button. Up to ten people can join a video conference.

While social networking is all about real people sharing information, such as interesting news articles and videos, Google believes there’s room for its algorithmic muscle in the social world too. A feature called “Sparks” serves up Web content on various topics, say sports or fashion, which Google’s technology has determined are popular. You can subscribe to categories of interest, or create your own custom category, and you’ll receive links to the latest content in your news feed.

Google is also releasing mobile apps of Google Plus for Android smartphones and iPhone, with special features like group messaging and cloud-based photo storage.

Google is referring to its new service as the Google Plus Project, to make clear that’s what’s available now is only the first installment of several more features it says it has in the pipeline.
Despite a checkered history in social (see Google Wave, Google Buzz and to some extent Orkut), Google has not given up on trying to conquer the social networking market.

Right now the service is only available as a “field trial” to a limited number of people. Since social networking success depends on critical mass, it seems likely that Google will open the service up to more people sooner rather than later.

So in the coming months we could have a better indication as to whether Google has finally cracked the code for success in the social networking market.

'Kerala could become India's new IT hub'

Kerala could well become an IT hub as the advantages enjoyed by Bengaluru, the country's 'Silicon Valley', start to wear thin, said a senior IT official here.

Gigo Joseph, CEO of Infopark Kochi said the congestion in India's leading IT hubs has presented Kerala with the unique opportunity to market itself as an alternative investment destination for IT and IT-enabled services companies.

"Moreover, it can benefit from IT companies starting to prefer the lower operating expenses of Tier-II and Tier-III locations for their bases," Joseph was quoted by Gulf News to have said.

A study by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India suggested Bengaluru's credentials were on the decline for a number of reasons, most of all due to crumbling infrastructure. It added that 55 per cent of the IT companies located there preferred to shift operations to alternative sites.

By 2015, Kerala is expected to have 2,00,000 direct job opportunities in IT and related industries, with Infopark expected to create more than 1,00,000 jobs, said the report.

C2 platform : Cognizant's high-tech customer service secret

Customers love Cognizant's C2 platform so much that they want to  buy it. Too bad it isn't for sale.

Cognizant Technology Solutions, a tech outsourcing and consulting firm that serves huge companies, has built a corporate version of Facebook that pulls together a bunch of Web 2.0 tools such as Twitter feeds, employee-written blogs, and chat. It's the kind of collaboration tool many businesses say they'd love to have. But Cognizant isn't peddling the product to clients; the company instead uses its homegrown social-networking platform, Cognizant 2.0, to share ideas and communicate internally -- and it gives customers access to the site so that they can post queries or search blogs and read tweets (called "Cweets") for answers to frequently asked questions.

Such high-tech customer service helps explain why Cognizant (CTSH), based in Teaneck, N.J., has been growing like crazy.

Internet body approves new web suffixes

A global body that charts the course of the Internet voted Monday to allow the creation of new website domain suffixes by private companies, enabling major firms to replace ".com" with their own brand.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) voted overwhelmingly in favour of the proposal at a meeting in Singapore despite fears that opening up new suffixes could cause some confusion.

"This is the biggest change to domain names since the creation of ‘.com’ 26 years ago," said Theo Hnarakis, chief executive of Melbourne IT Digital Brand Services, a California-based company that provides online branding services.

Under the changes, businesses would no longer be restricted to the list of generic top level domains (gTLDs) that include .com, .net and .org when they apply to register a website address. Industry observers say global giants such as Apple, Toyota and BMW, to cite examples from various regions, could be in the vanguard of launching websites with their own domain names.
It will potentially help the big brands to have their names as their domain names. For example, Pepsi can have domains ending in .pepsi such as miranda.pepsi. It can be used by regions in such a way that the regional names are listed as the suffix. For example, .kerala where domain names such as business.kerala, travel.kerala, tourism.kerala etc… can be more relevant.
By the introduction of these domain names, the entire online business model may change and the way how the search engines work will also change.

With a price tag of $185,000, creating a new domain won’t be cheap or easy. ICANN — short for the Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and Numbers — will make the final decisions on new domains. The group requires that applicants be "established public or private organizations," with the necessary technical capability to keep a domain running. This is, to a great extent, an option for keeping the domain name traders away.

How to hide friends on Facebook

Privacy is being a major concern when our social life on the web is increasing rapidly. Any information about us that is displayed on the web, will be available to anyone, if it not properly secured. And this information can be handled by malicious users and it could work against us.

Suppose I were a business man who has both my clients and competitors on my friends list in Facebook. If my friends list was visible to all, my competitors could access my client’s information and approach them and that would be more than enough for all my hard work to go down the drain. Similarly if my kid’s friend’s list was visible to everyone, it may also not be such a good idea. Hence as I said earlier any information even, our contacts should be limited to ourselves and our trusted group. So it is a good option to hide your friends list from people whom you are are not so familiar with and stay secured.

To hide your friends list in Facebook you need to follow these steps:
  1. Privacy Settings
In the main menu on the top right, click on Account –>Privacy Settings. (Refer Fig.1)
  2. View Settings
In the Privacy Setting, Go to “Connecting on Facebook” and click View Settings as below.Facebook-HideFriends-View Settings
  3. See your Friend List
In the Privacy Setting, Go to to the option “See your Friend List”, where you could choose who can view your friends list. You have 4 options to choose from – Everyone can view your friends list, or it be viewed by your Friends of Friends or you could specify the users individually by customization.Facebook-HideFriends-FriendList
  4. Customize
When you choose customizing option, you could  hide your friends list from everyone or specify a group of people whom you wish to hide it from. Facebook-HideFriends-CustomPrivacy
Hiding you friends list does not mean that any other information that you put on Facebook is secure, you should also be aware of the privacy settings on Facebook. . Its a good choice to learn about privacy on any social networking site you access and  stay secure on the web!

Six factors to consider in a job offer ......

When the job market is good, companies are often looking to strengthen their talent pool. If an offer comes your way, that is great news. You are considered a high performing individual in the job market. If you are comfortable in your current job and have no ‘push’ factor to move on, you have a difficult task deciding on the offer. Here’s a checklist of six factors to consider.

Role vs. Designation

It is important to understand what the job is all about. HR heads often talk about employees wanting to come back to their earlier jobs because these employees did not understand their role and made the mistake of moving into roles they were not suited for. Succumbing to the lure of fancy designations is a definite no. Ask the organisation about the role, expectations from that role and then decide whether you can take up the challenge or not.

Career path

So, you like the role, but where is it going to take you two years down the line? Ask your potential employer about the growth prospects. If you want to work across functions, ask whether the organisation is open to such an idea. Ask about the promotion policy of the organisation. On an average, how often are employees given promotions at your level?

Salary

Talking salary hike is one of the most important and sometimes trickiest parts of the job switch. HR heads say it is acceptable to negotiate a salary offer across most levels. A pay hike of 25% to 30% is considered reasonable, but one size does not fit all.  If you are not comfortable with the offer, you can convey that it is not up to the expectations. Do not, however, base your decision to switch jobs solely on the basis of salary offered.

Working hours

Do not underestimate the working hours of your potential workplace. Perhaps your current organisation is not a stickler when it comes to clocking those nine-and-a-half hours. That may not be the case in your next organisation. Giving up a five-day work week may also be difficult because your family may be well-adjusted to that. So, be clear what you are getting into. Also, ask about the leave policy before you join.

Development programmes

Re-skilling is a necessity of modern careers. If you are an engineer, you may want to acquire that coveted MBA. Or may be your job requires you to learn a new technology. You may also have plans of joining a course in a new skill few months down the line. Ask your organisation whether it helps with such initiatives.

Brand matters

Career choices are governed by our expectations from the career. Do you want to work in a company that gives you the comfort of a big brand, a known name? Or do you want to rough it out in a start-up kind of an environment? Or may be you want to venture into a sector that is growing and offers big challenges. Be clear about the choice you are making.

Making of Avatar

Motion capture, motion tracking, or mocap are terms used to describe the process of recording movement and translating that movement onto a digital model. It is used in military, entertainment, sports, and medical applications. In filmmaking it refers to recording actions of human actors, and using that information to animate digital character models in 2D or 3D computer animation. When it includes face, fingers and captures subtle expressions, it is often referred to as performance capture. Movies use motion capture for CG effects, in some cases replacing traditional cel animation, and for completely computer-generated creatures, such as Jar Jar Binks, Gollum, The Mummy, King Kong, and the Na'vi from the film Avatar.
